Rick's Profile




Rick has worked in the IT industry for over 20 years primarily the Unix environment and specifically with HP-UX. He has worked on both sides of the IT desk as an Assistant IT Manager and as a consultant. His career has given him experience from a number of different industries including Insurance, Manufacturing, Law Enforcement, Retail, Service and Healthcare.

Rick has over 14 years’ experience as a Baan ERP System Administrator and over 20 years of Unix experience. He has been involved with all aspects of HP-UX, Baan and Oracle installations, performance tuning, upgrades, new system installations, OmniBack/Data Protector configurations, Disk Array installations and configurations, migrations to new platforms and/or new databases and system relocation projects.

Rick has been involved in the entire Systems Development Life Cycle, from the initial business analysis and requirements gathering, on through system configuration and implementation, administration, end user training, support and documentation. During those years he has also been active with Project Management, interacting regularly with customers and the IT Staff to create project plans, maintain status updates and manage timelines, deliverables, and expectations.

Richard Hines (Rick) grew up in a rural town on the west side of MI.  He graduated from Grand Rapids Baptist College (now known as Cornerstone University) with a Bachelor's Degree in Communication.  He had many and varied jobs through High School and College: janitor, maintenance man, installing lawn sprinklers, farm irrigation equipment, tutor ,teacher and Youth Pastor.  After moving to the east side of Michigan in 1980.  He worked in retail, shipping and receiving, manufacturing and purchasing.

In the fall 1988 Rick started a manufacturer's rep company in the Detroit Metro area.  Unfortunately in the spring of 1989 a recession hit and the economy was hit hard ... and so was the income.  In order to supplement his business he started teaching at Michigan Computer Institute in the evenings.  That was his real start in computer technology.  In 1990 he dissolved his company and went to work for Computer Decisions Intentional in Novi, MI ... still teaching in the evenings.  His title was Ancillary Product Consultant which included installing, adminstering ad teaching word processing, spreadsheet and database products on SCO Unix.  In the 1994 he went to work for George P. Johnson Company managing their IT department.  During his employment with GPJ he was instrumental in implementing their Baan ERP solution.  This implementation started on a Data General Unix server and was later migrated to a HP 9000 Unix server utilizing an Oracle Database.  Rick was responsible for administration of HP-UX and Oracle, development of the Baan ERP software, backup and recovery, support and overseeing the Help Desk.

In 1998 he went to work for Bloomfield Computing Solutions (now known as Logicalis).  He was hired because of his knowledge and expertise of Baan, Oracle and HP-UX.  In 1998 Rick served as member of the Baan Tools Subcommittee.  During Rick's 14 years with Logicalis his job included: 
  • Baan and Oracle implementations on HP-UX
  • Installing new HP servers (PA-RISC, Itanium and Blades)
  • Installation, configuration, administration, upgrades, patching, training and performance tuning for HP-UX and Oracle
  • Installation, configuration, administration, training and performance tuning for HP's OmniBack/Data Protector backup software, including configuration of tape libraries
  • Diaster Recovery
  • Data Center relocation
  • Project Management
  • Data array and storage administration
  • HP C7000 Blade Enclosure implementations
  • Business Process Flow analysis

A couple of Rick's hobbies include:  Woodworking (he has made baby cribs for 6 grand children and 1 nephew) and boating.
